Abstract

This study deals with the development of a methodology for zoning through an evaluation of current zoning practices in Sir Lanka. Chapter One of the study is concerned with zoning in general , firstly it discusses the historical background of zoning, Then it focuses upon the definition , scope and objectives , The emphasis is given on the types of zoning and their relative importance, finally it discusses some theoritical concepts in relation to zoning. Chapter Two of the study is devoted to an examination of current zoning practices in Sri Lanka. This has been done on the basis of a literature survey, it was revealed in this study tnat there are zoning problems at both regional and local levels. Chapter Three deals with the case study of Gampaha Urban Council area. The problems of current zoning practices related to the area identified through a situation alanalysis . The magnitude of the problem in terms of zoning has been identified thereafter. Chapter four proposes a methodology to overcome the above short-comings. This consists of several stages, which are discussed seperately. (Also it emphasizes on the important sub-linkages). Finally, Chapter five presents the conclutions and recommendations of the study.
