Environmental awareness on the Bolgoda ecosystem: approaches and actions
(Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka, 2023-10-18) Jayawardena, CL; Seneviratne, TM
Bolgoda is the largest freshwater wetland with two interconnected lakes in Sri Lanka located in the southern boundary of Colombo District and extending to the Kalutara District. Despite Bolgoda having a high ecological, social and economic value, it has been listed by Global Nature Fund as one of the “Threatened Lakes of the Year 2018. Hence, protective, preventive and rectification measures seem essential and an important aspect would be enhancing the awareness of this unique system, especially among the local communities to manage man-made disruptions. We holistically attempted to address the requirement of developing awareness in a two-fold approach: to increase environmental awareness and information sharing. The initiative employed a systematically designed series of activities to share information and develop insights into the Bolgoda region. These activities included guided sessions on information retrieval, promoting evidence-based decision-making and rational thinking, questionnaires on environmental literacy, and seminars. An article for the Bolgoda Plains research magazine, published by the University of Moratuwa, was also produced. Following these activities, a bibliographic reference for the Bolgoda Ecosystem was compiled. This reference links existing scientific publications, regulatory measures, and recent developments to provide a foundation for future research. It is planned to be updated annually to consolidate the relevant knowledge. These self-motivated and self-funded efforts establish a solid foundation for enhancing environmental literacy from a library perspective. This empowers scientists, researchers, and administrators to make informed decisions and contribute to the conservation and management of the Bolgoda Ecosystem, ensuring its long-term sustainability for both the ecosystem itself and the associated communities.

Conservation of ecosystems such as Bolgoda is crucial in achieving sustainable development goal 11 – Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. To conserve such valuable ecosystems, the importance of reviewing research has been highlighted. Grey literature such as theses and dissertations are important sources of information since they include valuable context-specific local information not published in conventional scientific publications. Hence this study attempted to carry out a bibliometric analysis of theses and dissertations related to the Bolgoda ecosystem. Keyword searches were conducted across various academic platforms and repositories, seeking records related to the Bolgoda Ecosystem up to the year 2022. Bibliographic details and subject areas were recorded, with particular attention to the frequency of the term "Bolgoda" in retrieved documents. The study identified a total of 45 theses and dissertations related to the Bolgoda ecosystem, with 11 from foreign institutions and the University of Moratuwa contributing the highest number (16) among local universities. The majority were Master of Science (MSc) theses (58%), followed by Ph.D. theses (18%), with 25 documents originating from Taught Postgraduate programs. Categorization of the research according to Millennium Ecosystem Services (MES) revealed that the majority focused on Regulating services (e.g., water), followed by Provisional services (e.g., food) and Cultural services (e.g., aesthetic and recreational). Notably, documents with restricted access had an average of 3.56 occurrences of the word "Bolgoda," while open-access documents had 20.2 occurrences. This bibliometric analysis provided a comprehensive overview of Bolgoda ecosystem-related research, highlighting a concentration on certain ecosystem services. The study emphasizes the need to expand local research into less-explored areas to effectively manage the Bolgoda ecosystem and work towards achieving sustainable development goals.

New accessions in e- way: new additions e group of library, University of Moratuwa
(The Library, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. Vantharumoolai, Chekaladi,Sri Lanka., 2006-12) Seneviratne, TM
Preparing new accession lists is a conventional current awareness service in academic and other libraries of Sri Lanka. New accession list normally contains a list of bibliographic records of items added to the library collection in order of their addition. Univerity of Moratuwa, Library (UML) had a tradition of preparing new accession lists quarterly. These list(s) were then sent to all academic departments of University of Moratuwa and other outside libraries of interest. However, it was noted that the time lag between the actual addition of items to library stock and the distribution of accession list to the academics is significant. As a result, academics did not have the opportunity of browsing or borrowing newly added items other than their own recommendations. On the other hand, inquiries regarding the items in the accession list were very low. Though, there is a possibility of generating New Accession lists through the Integrated Library System, further editing and inspection are always needed to publish a quality document. When consider the time and resources spent to generate these lists, UML felt printed accession lists were not cost effective.

A walking and talking library: a study on the impact of the strategy “read – aloud” on older adults with vision impairments
(Sri Lanka Library Association, Colombo 07, 2023-06-27) Tennakoon, TMRPK; Dissanayake, KH; Seneviratne, TM
The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of read aloud strategy on old lives with vision impairments for reducing loneliness and social isolation. Read aloud is an activity that incorporates variations in pitch, tone, pace, volume, pauses, eye contact, questions, and comments and provides cognitive stimulation to older adults. For older adults who loved to read all their lives, listening to someone read to them can bring profound comfort and joy. However, unlike in Western countries reading aloud is not a popular concept in Asia. 8 respondents (between 62 – 77 years) were selected considering family support, easy access, willingness to try out the concept of reading aloud, and level of vision impairment for the research. The majority (5) were female adults. An open-ended questionnaire was utilized to collect data after exposing them to 8 sessions (3- 4 hours) during 4 months. Various reading materials are used according to the preference of adults. Most loved materials by males were comic stories while females loved to listen to short stories mainly. Reading novels was not productive as most of them could not remember the previous session. The interest of older adults in read-aloud activities improved considerably after each session. Willingness to adopt the concept to eradicate loneliness and social isolation showcased their willingness to social engagement. It was evident that those who had the habit of reading could easily concentrate on the activities and sometimes they could predict the next part of the story. Studies proved that social isolation and loneliness caused by vision impairment can be reduced by reading aloud with the assistance of family or caregivers. This research concludes the need for large print reading materials for visually impaired adults, a special library corner for the elderly, and the introduction of read-aloud activities for the elderly especially institutionalized.

(National Library and Documentation Services Board, Independence Avenue, Colombo 07., 2023-09-08) Seneviratne, TM; Jayawardena, CL
The use of methodologies, practices, and activities are encouraged in engineering education to solve real-world problems for which knowledge generation and information transfer is vital. For this purpose, it is essential to have access to authoritative information as much as possible. Dervin’s sensemaking framework involves a process of seeking, encountering and using the information to address an information need with respect to ambiguous and complex real-world situations. Retrieving information on Bolgoda Ecosystem for the purpose of environmental management was an activity with engineering undergraduate library orientation during the pre-academic term. Accordingly, the students have engaged in a guided literature search to retrieve information from nine resources on a topic of interest from six categories of the Bolgoda Ecosystem. This individual exercise comprising 13 hands-on sessions was designed in line with the sense-making framework and created in MS Form. The results were manually analyzed and evaluated for information retrieval productivity with respect to relevance and document type. The results from 1169 search records revealed that 98.3% have selected a topic relevant to a complex situation and they were able to retrieve 89.5% of appropriate document categories that included 89.9% for books/reports, 90.3% for articles and 87.1% for conference papers. It was also observed that Google Books, ScienceDirect database and the Institutional Repository of Moratuwa University have been mostly accessed for document retrieval. The productive use of sense-making theory for information retrieval during a library orientation is evident from this study. Also, it can be recommended as a tool to educate library users on effective information systems and designing new information systems. This enabled the fresh engineering undergraduates to engage in evidence-based decision-making and rational thinking to develop environmental awareness on a sensitive ecosystem.

Developing a reliable monitoring framework to detect environmental changes near mining areas : a remote sensing approach
    (2011) Thiruchittampalam, S; Jayawardena, CL
Agriculture and mining are two key industries that govern the growth of the socio-economic systems of a country. Detrimental effects on the socio-environment during mining activities are unavoidable. Hence, a proper balance between social, environmental, and economic aspects needs to be promoted in mining industries. Developing robust real-time monitoring systems will prevent overexploitation of resources, negative impact on the socio-environmental system, illegal mining activities, and abandoned mines without proper reclamation. This study aims to recommend utilising no-cost satellite data to assess effects on the environment due to mining. Further, the machine learning approach in this study is expected to lead to an autonomous realtime monitoring mechanism. Based on accessibility and stakeholder interest, a cluster of abandoned and operating quarry sites in the Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka, was selected as the study area. Freely available high spatial resolution satellite images were obtained from Google Earth and Copernicus Open Access Hub (Sentinel 2 satellite data). Imageries acquired were subjected to object-based land cover classification. Machine learning algorithms, namely, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine, were used in the classification process. The best performing algorithm in land cover classification was chosen for multitemporal analysis of the area of interest. In addition, false colour composites and spectral indices were generated using Sentinel 2 images to differentiate human-induced negative impacts and natural changes. The results show that Support Vector Machine outperformed other algorithms in classifying land cover near mining areas. Further, multitemporal analysis of land cover changes using this algorithm implies autonomous monitoring using satellite data was viable. Additionally, auxiliary information such as false colour composites and spectral indices confirmed that the increased proportion of water bodies in the area was due to leaving the abandoned mines without proper rehabilitation. This study provides evidence that the fusion of machine learning based classification with spectral indices helps develop robust monitoring systems.

Evaluation of machine learning algorithms in classifying multispectral imagery on waterbody extraction
    (2021) Jayawardena, CL; Brinthan, K; Thanujan, T
A comprehensive study for utilizing multispectral satellite imagery to enhance novel environmental monitoring techniques is crucial in terms of accuracy, processing time, and cost for a sustainable triple bottom. The accurate classification of water bodies from other features optimizes spatiotemporal analysis to address global challenges. Therefore, this study emerges as the new research frontier in proposing an apt algorithm for recognizing water resources and coastline in Sri Lanka. This study explores the potential of using classification algorithms for geospatial assessments and applications with their accuracy and reliability. The acquired Collection 2 Level 2 Landsat 8 imagery was geometrically and radiometrically pre-processed, and a false-colour composite was produced from the bands: short-wave infrared, red and nearinfrared. A total of 280 training samples were created with the reference pixels of 50.13 percent for water bodies and 49.87 percent for other features. The confusion matrix was generated using a distinct set of 500 random points for each classification technique, and the F-score and kappa coefficient were calculated for the accuracy assessment. The study depicts that the supervised algorithms: Support Vector Machine, Maximum Likelihood and Random Trees, and unsupervised algorithm: ISO Cluster performs equally in classifying water bodies and other features with higher kappa coefficient exceeding 0.95. Out of these, ISO Cluster was efficient than other algorithms due to reduced handling time. The findings enhance the decision-making ability on extracting surface water bodies using freely available 30 m spatial resolution imagery.
