- item: Conference-Full-textInvestigation into off-the-road tire performance at Aruwakkalu Quarry(2015-08-14) Walpita, S; Priyankara, I; Wickrama, M; Jayawardena, CThe performance of heavy mobile equipment used in the mining industry is often restricted by the capabilities of their tires. These off-the-road tires experience highly variable and complex working conditions in comparison to other commercially used tires. As a result, expenditures on tires occupy a reasonable portion of the total mining cost and off-the-road tires are prone to complex failure modes, which the studies have been limited. Lack of quantitative analysis on the performance characteristics of these tires hinders the overall productivity in mining industry, specially in local context. The paper presents a study on off-the-road tire performance conducted at two selected mine sites in Sri Lanka. Site specific operational and environmental conditions encountered by the off-the-roads tires were taken into account, to determine the modes of failure and optimum tire performance through best practices.

- item: Conference-Full-textStability analysis of slopes in Aruwakkalu limestone mine during rain: a finite element approach(IEEE, 2020-07) Thirukumaran, A; Dananjaya, L; Dilshan, T; Dassanayake, A; Jayawardena, C; Wickrama, M; Fujii, Y; Boeut, S; Weeraddana, C; Edussooriya, CUS; Abeysooriya, RPWater in the forms of rain, snowmelt and groundwater is identified to be the major factor influencing the reduction of the stability of the slopes. The increasing trend of annual rainfall has been a major challenge to meet the production requirement in Aruwakkalu limestone mine. The stability of the slopes in active quarry area of the mine under various rainfall intensities is studied in this paper. The slopes are modelled numerically by finite element method and subjected to analysis under strength reduction method semi coupled with transient seepage analysis. The results are expressed in terms of variations in factor of safety, pore water pressure and displacement with different rainfall intensities. Based on the results an economical bench design is recommended to be used when opening a new pit area.
