- item: Conference-Full-textAssessment of design and construction related factors influencing maintainability of green roofs: a case of high-rise buildings in Sri Lanka(Ceylon Institute of Builders - Sri Lanka, 2023-07-21) Kulasekara, G; Mallawaarachchi, BH; Damsari, AGUPoor design and construction practices can significantly impact the future maintainability of green roofs in high-rise buildings. While previous studies have focused on green roof construction and design features, this research specifically evaluates the effects of design and construction related factors on maintainability of green roofs, with a focus on high-rise buildings in Sri Lanka. The study begins by reviewing literature on green roofs, their maintainability, and the design and construction factors that influence maintainability. The identified factors were used as a basis for evaluating the effects of design and construction on future maintainability of green roofs. A deductive approach is adopted within a quantitative research design, utilising a survey strategy. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 58 experienced construction professionals, while four expert interviews are conducted to gather additional insights. Data analysis techniques include the Relative Importance Index and content analysis. As derived through analysis, initial cost and roof design were identified as design-related key factors, while cost of construction and availability of machinery and materials were the construction related key factors influencing maintainability of green roofs. Accordingly, the study proposed strategies to enhance the maintainability of green roofs in Sri Lankan high-rise buildings focusing on cost effectiveness, design effectiveness and effective management of green roofs. As a main implication, this research contributes to the development of sustainable and maintainable green roofs in Sri Lanka by providing valuable insights for the construction professionals and policy makers in the country.

Building industry identifies technology as vital. Although the building industry is broadly identified as unique and conservative, at the same time construction industry has to have varied according to these innovative technological variations. In addition to that these technological variations may have potential to influence everyone's professions in different ways. Although, the concept of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is not practiced in Sri Lankan construction industry yet, it is likely to become the project delivery standard in future. Introduce with the vision “sustainability by building smarter”, BIM will improve the performance of building professionals. The current knowledge does not adequately explain how the functions of a Quantity Surveyor are affected by BIM. This paper presents a study on comparative effectiveness offered by BIM for the traditional functions of a Quantity Surveyor. The study is interesting because the new knowledge will help to develop strategies for professional development and update the education curricula to train the Quantity Surveyors to face future challenges.

Although construction industry is deemed to be conservative, the adoption of BIM redefined traditional professional boundaries. Quantity Surveyor (QS) is one prominent role which needs to compete with aforesaid challenge, where the history provides substantial evidences to its amenability. However, this conversion may influence in either way, where it can upgrade or downgrade the profession since unwieldiness may adhere to the situation, it‘s being used. Hence, this paper aimed at identifying comparative effectiveness of BIM in performing QSs‘ tasks. Through an extensive literature study features of BIM, QSs‘ practices, and the competency of performing BIM adhered QSs‘ tasks were discovered. A documentary survey utilized for the identification of potential capabilities of performing QSs‘ tasks through BIM tools finally, a content analysis was conducted to analyse the data using a qualitative approach. It was revealed that when executing traditional QSs‘ tasks, BIM has proven a great adeptness and contrariwise for modern tasks. Tasks directly linked with numerals experience splendid benefits through BIM. Thus, it was concluded it is advantageous to perform traditional QSs‘ tasks through
